My dad, Terry Lillicrap, told me a
story of how of his dad, Stanley, had been walking around the neighbourhood
of the Windsor Pub in Plymouth one quiet night during the war. His dad, my
grandfather was a fire warden.
My grandfather got talking to the publican and after a while they decided
that probably nothing was going to happen that night and my grandfather
walked home to his house in Sussex Place, about 100m from the pub.
Ten minutes later, when he was back in the garden shelter with his family,
there was a terrific explosion and they later learned that a large landmine
bomb had fallen on the pub, a direct hit. It was probably released by a
returning German bomber after a raid on another city. The publican was
killed and in the house next door the Horell family lost both parents and
four of six children, two sisters being away from home that night. |
