The Golden Lion was situated on Lion
Place. The former Grade II listed building dates back to 1910, although
there is an intriguing early 18thC sculptured and embossed overdoor and
surround, said to have come from the north wing of Hylton Castle, with the
initials I H D for John and Dorothy Hilton, and the Hilton Crest and the
date 1705 in early 18thC lettering. The pub was completely destroyed by fire
in a suspected arson attack in July 2019 and had been closed a while before.
The remains were up for auction in 2022. The building was delisted after the
fire. |
