I was told long ago that my second
great-grandfather William Toulmin 15 Nov 1821 – 25 Aug 1895 bought the
Shakespeare Tavern and handed in the licence. He then turned it into a
working men’s temperance coffee house. He was a shopkeeper at 106 Friargate,
and a Methodist minister. There was a Free Gospel Chaple between 38 and 100
Ashmoor Street which might also have included the Friendship Tavern. I
understand that the area was demolished for redevelopment after the Second
World War. |
